• Water is always a good option. It keeps you hydrated and can loosen up congestion and stuffiness. Adding a bit of lemon to it can get some vitamin C in there.
• Soup is also good. Clear soups and broths are good for both hydration and keeping a steady calorie intake. This is a good option if the sickness has upset your stomach.
• Decaffeinated herbal teas like ginger, chamomile, hibiscus, are good options.
• Ice chips and ice pops are good ways to get in more water.
• Sports drinks are an ok option. They’re good for situations of severe hydration but lack nutritional value and contain a lot of sugar.
• Avoid caffeine if possible. Caffeine can keep you awake during a time when sleep would be helpful. It can also dehydrate you in and of itself. Keep intake of soda, coffee, and caffeinated teas to a minimum.
• Fruit juice is better if it’s fresh squeezed. Store bought juices contain a lot of added sugar.
• Alcohol is a no-no altogether. It dehydrates, and it can exasperate some symptoms.
Overall, good hydration is important to be able to properly recover from an illness. If symptoms of an illness persist for more than 10 days, consult a healthcare professional.
