November is American Diabetes Month. Because of that, we will have a brief overview about the most common type of diabetes in the U.S, type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body can no longer regulate blood sugar. The body’s cells become resistant to insulin. This requires the pancreas to make more insulin, to the point it can no longer keep up. The increased production can cause the pancreas to wear out.
Type 2 diabetes symptoms include:
• Excessive thirst
• Unintentional weight loss or gain
• Excessive urination
• Darkened skin under armpits, chin, or groin
• Blurry vision
• Unusual urine smell
There are often no specific symptoms, and type 2 diabetes can go undiagnosed until blood tests are ordered. Risk factors include unhealthy weight and high consumption of processed foods, among others. If you feel you may have type 2 diabetes, please visit your primary care physician for a checkup and possible blood test.
