Usually, when the discussion of osteoporosis comes up, we associate it with women. This is because women are more likely to have the disorder than men. However, millions of men are still at risk of developing it. Oftentimes, because of its association with women, osteoporosis is discovered in men later when treatment is not as effective. This can lead to more severe cases of it. Here is a list of risk factors to watch for:

  • Family history
  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • COPD
  • Taking certain medications for prostate issues
  • Taking certain medications for acid reflux
  • Previous history of fractures
  • Being underweight

For men over 50 who have one or more of these risk factors, having your bones examined regularly is recommended. Also, don’t wait until there is an issue, you can take steps to help prevent osteoporosis today.
